Responsible and Sustainable Tourism

We are conscious that even a small tourism business like ours use significant amounts of energy and natural resources. We work hard to mitigate the impact of our activities, as well as achieving comfort for our guests through following our environmental plan, including:

using energy-efficient lighting, skylights, solar energy and efficient hot water gas systems
recycling paper, plastics and glass, which we ask our guests to help us achieve
installing water-reducing devices
offering guests the options of not changing the linen daily
using natural and non-chemical cleaning products when possible
washing in cold water and ‘line’ solar drying

by restoring our historic home and installing insulation, house wrap, new wiring, plumbing, that included mixers, and installed dual flush toilets, only keeping the original cistern as a historic feature
the addition of efficient heat pumps
monitor our energy use, electrical, water gas
buy local when possible, great markets
involving ourselves in the community by being members of the NZ. Historic Places Trust, Brook Sanctuary, Friends of Historic Founders, and Suter Gallery, won a Nelson City Council Environment award, fund raiser for child cancer and supporters of the Wakefield Youth Trust Scholarship

The 'Victorian Cottage' 2010

In 2009 we started to build our new ' Victorian cottage' giving us a new challenge and opportunity to be very ‘ environmentally conscious” including:

passive solar system, ground storage
solar heated concrete pad, some solar outdoor lighting
high spec. insulation
double glazed Low E windows and doors, all with fly screens, double glazed skylights
all new ‘Energy Star’ appliances
recycled old rimu front door and wall panels as well as making some of our furniture from this recycled wood.
low flow shower heads, dual flush toilets
gardens designed for no or low water, herb and vegetable gardens as well as a large native garden
board walks were also used for tree protection

We encourage our guests to offer us new and exciting ideas on sustainability.

We are proud to have achieved a Qualmark Enviro-Silver Award. We are committed to the future of an 'unspoilt' New Zealand and with your help, will strive for gold.
